NAD+ Patch vs IV vs Injection vs NR/NMN: An Honest Comparison
Every NAD+ route makes trade-offs. Here's what each one actually does, what's been studied in people, and how to choose.
Key takeaways
- NAD+ is essential for cellular energy and repair, and levels tend to decline with age.
- IV NAD+ puts NAD+ directly into the bloodstream, but outcome evidence is limited and the body's response is complex.
- Oral precursors (NR and NMN) have the most human trial data for raising NAD+-related markers in blood.
- Transdermal NAD+ depends entirely on the delivery method, and published human data on patches is limited.
- There's no single best route. Choose based on evidence, convenience, cost and your clinician's advice.
If you've decided NAD+ is worth exploring, the next question is how. Clinics offer IV drips, some providers offer injections, supplement aisles are full of NR and NMN, and patches are everywhere. Each route answers a different need.
The four routes at a glance
| Route | What it delivers | Human evidence | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| IV infusion | NAD+ itself, directly into the bloodstream | A human pilot study tracked NAD+ and its breakdown products during a 6-hour infusion and found a complex response, not a simple rise [2]. Outcome evidence is limited. | Clinic visit, 2–4 hours, cost; discomfort like chest pressure or nausea is commonly reported when infusions run fast |
| Injection | NAD+ itself, beneath the skin | Limited published human data | Needles, sterile technique, cold storage once mixed |
| Oral NR / NMN | Precursors your body converts to NAD+ | The largest human dataset; trials show they raise NAD+-related markers in blood [3][4] | Daily pills; you're taking a precursor, not NAD+ |
| Transdermal patch | NAD+ itself, through the skin | Limited; depends entirely on the delivery method | Skin is a real barrier; quality varies widely |
IV NAD+
An IV bypasses every barrier and delivers a large amount in one session. That's its strength. Its limits are practical (time, cost, a clinic chair) and scientific: the body processes infused NAD+ quickly into other compounds, and controlled evidence that IV NAD+ improves specific outcomes is limited [2]. If you choose an IV, choose a supervised setting.
Oral NR and NMN
Nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) are building blocks your body converts into NAD+. They're the best-studied option in people. A 2018 trial found NR was well tolerated and raised blood NAD+ in healthy middle-aged and older adults [3], and a 2021 trial found NMN improved muscle insulin sensitivity in women with prediabetes [4]. Broader benefits are still being studied, and results vary by outcome.
NAD+ patches
NAD+ is about 663 daltons, water-loving and charged, so it crosses intact skin poorly on its own [5]. A passive patch is unlikely to deliver much. Iontophoresis can increase skin transport of charged molecules [6], which makes it the most credible approach for an NAD+ patch. But human data measuring how much NAD+ any patch delivers into the bloodstream is limited, and none has been published for LavION. For the full breakdown, read Do NAD+ Patches Work?
How to choose
- If you want the most human evidence: oral NR or NMN.
- If you want a large, supervised dose: an IV in a clinical setting, with realistic expectations.
- If you want a needle-free routine you don't have to think about daily: an iontophoretic patch, understanding that product-specific blood-level data is limited.
- In every case: talk to a clinician if you're pregnant, nursing, managing a condition or taking medication.
Many people combine routes, for example a daily oral precursor with a patch. Do that with your clinician's input.
Where LavION fits
Two LavION formulas are built around NAD+: AMPLIFY (NAD+ 1,300 mg and GHK-Cu 5 mg) and IGNITE (NAD+ 1,300 mg, MOTS-c 5 mg and GHK-Cu 5 mg). Tested athletes should note that MOTS-c is prohibited at all times by WADA [7]. See AMPLIFY vs IGNITE.
LavION uses the ActivaPatch IontoGo 12.0 iontophoresis device, which applies a low electrical current to help move charged molecules across the skin during a wear period of up to 12 hours. LavION is needle-free and does not use microneedles. Ingredient amounts describe what is loaded into the formula, not measured delivery into the body. Standard LavION use is one patch every 5 days, worn for up to 12 hours. A Good Faith Exam with a licensed provider is required before your first purchase.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best way to take NAD+?
There's no single best way. Oral NR and NMN have the most human data, IVs deliver the most directly, and patches are the most convenient but least studied. The right choice depends on your goals, budget and clinician's advice.
Is an NAD+ patch as good as an IV?
There isn't evidence to say so. An IV delivers a known, large amount directly into the bloodstream. How much NAD+ a LavION patch delivers hasn't been measured in published human studies, so we don't claim equivalence.
Does NR raise NAD+?
Yes. Human trials show NR raises blood NAD+, including a 2018 trial in middle-aged and older adults. Clinical benefits beyond that marker are still being studied.
Does NMN raise NAD+?
Human trials show NMN can raise NAD+-related markers, and one 2021 trial found improved muscle insulin sensitivity in women with prediabetes. Broader benefits are still under study.
Can I combine NR or NMN with an NAD+ patch?
Many people do. Discuss it with your clinician, especially if you take other supplements or medications.
How often is an NAD+ patch used?
Standard LavION use is one patch every 5 days, worn for up to 12 hours.
